Slip dresses to slogans: six 2014 fashion trends
Desperate to break free from your thick knits? Can’t wait to ditch the thermals-under-the-jeans routine? We don’t blame you. Thankfully, spring is just around the corner (we hope), and that means fashion is about to wake up once more. So, what does 2014 have in store for fashion trends? Read on and we’ll spill the beans…
1. Spaghetti straps
Remember the good old 90s? The decade of DMs, The Cranberries, and slip dresses – well you may have noticed that it’s back. This year it’s going to be bigger than ever. Cue slinky slip dresses like Kate Moss used to wear. Wear over bare shoulders or go grunge by teaming with a t-shirt underneath and DMs on your feet.
2. Big trousers
Ready to wave bye bye to your skinny jeans? (No, we’re not quite there either). But if you’re truly into fashion, you’ll need to invest in a pair of big trousers this year. Yep, palazzo trousers (pictured) are back. Think floaty fabric, flappy material around the ankles, and legs being able to breathe once again. Great for summer.
3. Get graphic
The classic graphic grid print is back and it looks like it’s going to come in all guns blazing. Checked cheesecloth shirts give the trend a laid-back look, while more formal shift dresses keep it smart. You choose.
The embellished clothing (and shoes) look was pretty big last year but it’s going to continue to shine (quite literally) through 2014 too. Think bling on your collars, tops and jumpers – buy, or do it yourself by adding your own studs and diamanté to a plain top or dress. Difficulty rating: 2/10.
5. Shift over
We mentioned the shift dress a little earlier, and lovers of this look will be thankful that it’s also a trend when it comes to tops. Shift tops are great for hiding a multitude of sins (Christmas over-indulgence still lurking? So what!). The shift skims the silhouette leaving you space to breathe. Graphic prints and single block colours are set to hit the rails soon.
Got something to say? Don’t say it with your mouth – say it on your t-shirt. Yep, the slogan is still going strong through 2014. Whether it’s grafitti-style, blingy foil print, or something a little smaller – t-shirts and jumpers are all about the words this year.
