Handbags, earrings, kimonos and more: five of our favourite Mother’s Day gifts on Etsy
Mother’s Day in the UK is less than a month away – on Sunday 15 March – so, if you’re like us, your attention will already be turning to gift ideas for mum that are a tad more original than anything involving chocolates and flowers (or both). Not that we ever turn away chocolates or flowers, mind.
Still, it’s always a pleasure to give someone a gift that is genuinely surprising, different, and tailored to what you know they love. Given that our blog on great Christmas gift ideas from Etsy – the online marketplace for handmade and vintage goods – went down a treat, we thought we’d go exploring on the site again and find you five of our favourite fashion-related Mother’s Day gifts. Here goes…
Handbag from SaiGon With Love
The brainchild of handbag maker Claudia Kelly, Etsy shop SaiGon With Love ships worldwide from Herne Bay on the Kent coast. If you’re from down that way, you may also have spotted her wares at the Pier Retail Village or at local fairs and markets.
Featuring stunningly rich colours and beautiful embroidered detail, we actually adore the whole Saigon With Love collection – but Claudia’s pink patchwork handbag with a studded flower detail is especially gorgeous, and just the thing you can picture your mum carrying proudly over her shoulder. For £24 (plus £6 UK shipping), it’s also a bargain!
Earrings from Coryographies
Cory Cuthbertson is an Oxford-based crafter whose fantastic handmade jewellery business, Coryographies (fab name, by the way!), has not surprisingly built up quite an Etsy following.
Cory’s USP is that all her jewellery is book-themed – so a perfect gift for the book lovers in your life – including her famous bookshelf necklaces, where you can choose from intricately detailed Harry Potter and Pride & Prejudice versions, among others.
Our favourite is Cory’s ‘stack of books’ earrings, though, made from polymer clay, and hand painted to resemble a stack of books dangling from each ear. Cute, eye-catching, and – at £15 (plus £3.20 UK P&P) – very affordable, it’s the ideal Mother’s Day gift for the woman whose library extends beyond the Fifty Shades trilogy.
Kimonos from Halina Shearman Designs
Kimono tops have become a popular wardrobe staple of late – perfect for layering, or for popping in your capsule wardrobe as a quick and lightweight way to add wow to any outfit.
Hailing from Ontario, Canada – but shipping worldwide – Halina Shearman Designs specialises in handmade kimono jackets, like this velvet number in a luxurious and vibrant royal blue (£40.38, plus £10.77 UK P&P). Timeless yet contemporary, it’s a great choice for any mother whose preferred wardrobe is a blend of classic styles and modern trends.
Bath products from 1818 Farms
If there’s one day of the year when mums can expect to get pampered, it’s Mothering Sunday – so what better than buying her some luxurious bath smellies?
Shipping worldwide from Alabama, 1818 Farms celebrates “life the way it used to be”, and has created a gorgeous collection of handcrafted bath products featuring only natural ingredients.
This 1818 Farms Gift Basket (£40.08) is the ideal introduction to this quirky yet stylish brand, featuring a tin of bath truffles, a cuticle balm, a ‘Hint of Mint’ lip balm, an individual ‘Lavender Goat’s Milk’ bath tea, and two bars of handcrafted soap – all packaged in an elegant container.
Shipping to the UK is, inevitably, a bit expensive at £26.72, but it would still make a lovely gift if you’re looking for something genuinely different that you can’t just pick up on the British high street. If that’s a bit much, you could always try the equally lovely Skin Softening Spa Experience – wrapped with a rope and ribbon in a gorgeous tin – which is £21.38, plus again £26.72 shipping.
Vintage brooch from Meanglean
While Etsy is brilliant for finding unique, handmade gifts, it’s also, of course, a marketplace for hundreds of thousands of remarkable vintage goods – each just one of a kind.
We like the story behind London-based “vintage treasures” shop Meanglean, which owner Christine – an enthusiast for anything small and shiny – has successfully turned from a hobby into her full-time job.
From earrings to pins and rings to necklaces, the hundreds of vintage jewellery items in Meanglean’s shop – starting at just £5 – should mean there’s something there that every mum will love.
For £10.69 (plus £2.34 shipping), we were drawn to this adorable 1960s glittery duck brooch, with its shimmering colours and cute detail – but you’re sure to find your own favourite!
