Suffragette: get the look
It’s been slated as the hottest film release of the year, and Suffragette is already notching up rave reviews.
With a host of strong women in lead roles, a stash of great outfits on screen, and a storyline that’s sure to inspire women up and down the country, we’re pretty sure it’s going to have a knock-on effect in the world of fashion, too.
So, if you like what you’ve seen of the lovely Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep, we’ve compiled a little selection of fashion picks to take your fancy.
Suffragette showcases women’s fashion of the late 19th and early 20th century. Forget the bright colours of today and pare back your wardrobe to muted earthy tones, natural fabrics such as wool and cotton, and clothing that leans towards the workwear aesthetic, as opposed to the flounces and frills of today’s fast fashion.
Prepare to take a step back in time…
1. The maxi coat
Wrap yourself up in a maxi coat and not only will you feel ready for anything, you’ll be well prepared for the cooler months ahead.
Leave loose or tie at the waist – this versatile jacket looks great either way. Plus it’s equally at home with a pair of jeans as it is with your slickest formal outfit.
We love this beautiful wool mix maxi coat in grey mélange by Just Female from ASOS for £165.
2. The cloche hat
We know Suffragette is all about seriously strong women and that ‘cutesie’ elements don’t really have a place.
However, there’s no denying that this beautiful cloche hat by Betmar Hats at Village Hats is about as cute as women’s hats come. That gorgeous autumnal colour gets our vote – especially for £24.95.
3. The maxi skirt
Work the Suffragette look and make it your own in this epic grey maxi skirt by Dagmara Joly on Etsy.
It’s handmade, high-waisted, and utterly unique. Plus, that row of off-centre buttons is a design dream. It can be yours for USD 145 (£96.42), plus postage.
4. The prim and proper blouse
AW15 is no time for baring unnecessary amounts of flesh, so wrap up warm and look the part in this elegant, and really rather lovely, denim Peter Pan collar blouse for £35 by Mademoiselle R at La Redoute.
It’s got everything the Suffragette sisters would love – curved collar, trapeze yoke, and dainty little cuffs – but it’s all wrapped up with an industrialist denim edge.
5. The Mary Jane
These Coolest Lass shoes (£40) by Clarks strike the perfect balance.
The heel gives them a feminine twist, while the T-bar means business. Not too high, not too low – just right for pounding the streets and putting the world to rights! Plus that burgundy leather is perfect for this season.
