AW14 menswear trends: the best bits, from tartan shirts to turtlenecks
We’ve cut through the fashion fluff to bring you the best bits of AW14’s menswear trends. Because the fashion moment that was ‘camel-coloured chinos’ really is over. Men, prepare to update your look…
Bomber jackets
Bomber. Baseball. Varsity. We don’t care what you call these short, snug-fitting jackets with a retro edge, as long as you embrace them. They’re perfect for October, before the real freeze kicks in. Go old school and hunt down a bomber with an orange lining (like you wore at the end of the ’80s while loitering around the Arndale centre). Express yourself with something a little wilder – floral, leaf-print, and galaxy scapes are all out there. Or give in to aviator chic and get all cosy with a faux-shearling collar. Hello Top Gun.
Tartan shirts
It’s been all about the check for a few years now, but it’s time to make space in your wardrobe because there’s a new kid in town – the tartan shirt. For this AW14 menswear trend, you’ve got two choices. Side with ’90s youth culture and keep the look a little bit loose and grungy. Or go for ’60s mod-style with a slim-fitting profile and buttons done all the way up to the top. Either one wins with us.
Oversized everything
Coats. Bags. Scarves. Dinners. OK, so we made up the last one but the other three are true. Honest. This is where AW14 menswear trends could get a little bit silly, but we’re hoping – as discerning Fashion & Style Directory readers – you’ll know when to stop. For coats, think knee-length, single-breasted commuter-style coats but a little bit chunkier. Bags are boxy and, if we didn’t know you better, could look like they’re smuggling at least three bowling balls. Scarves are pretty much on the blanket side now – which is good if you ever fancy an impromptu picnic mid-November.
The turtleneck
If there is a piece of clothing that screams ‘beatnik’ more than the humble turtleneck, please tell us. Yep, this look is all about keeping your Adam’s apple tucked out of the cold. Wondering how to wear it? Try swapping your standard shirt and tie for a turtleneck and topping with your favourite sporting jacket. Edgy in a ‘Horse and Hounds’, Karl Kennedy off Neighbours kind of way.
Monochrome
Black and white. Black and white. Black and white. While some AW14 menswear trends require a bit of deciphering, we’re pretty sure you’ll be able to figure this look out.
