Finding your perfect winter coat on the high street
If there is one investment you make for your winter wardrobe it has to be the coat.
It is probably the single most expensive item of clothing you will wear throughout the season so you have to love it and be happy with it. After all, it is that one piece of cold weather clothing that has to be able to be dressed down as well as up and, most importantly be warm.
There are so many colours and styles to choose from and as ever the great British high street has every winter coat trend nailed.
The camel classic
First up is how cleverly the classic camel coat manages to reinvent itself year after year. It really is timeless.
Top choice would be this slightly masculine Crombie style from Topshop (£89).
Fabulous animal prints
Another old faithful, and a trend that certainly never dies down, is the leopard and animal print. Biba at House of Fraser has done it perfectly this season with a coat that has a detachable faux fur collar – it’s currently sold out online and instore due to high demand, but it’s worth keeping an eye on the website for new stock.
Another fabulous leopard print we are loving is this Brave Soul one from ASOS (pictured) – plus it’s currently in the sale (for £50), which might mean it has to be our favourite 2015 coat so far. Hold that thought, though, as we have more suggestions!
If you are looking to buy into the animal trend for the first time, or are nervous that it might be a bit over the top for you, then look no further than Autograph at Marks & Spencer (£64.50). This really is a beautiful, stylish coat and the cut is suited for every shape. This particular coat has been featured in almost every magazine and is on the radar of many fashion editors, so if it’s good enough for them then it’s good enough for us!
Bold statement colours
Another trend that we adore is the statement colour. Last year was cobalt blue, and it’s a colour that we still adore. A beauty you might love in this eye-popping shade this year is this one courtesy of Missguided (£35).
If we were to choose a statement colour for AW15 it would be pink, and our retailer of choice would be Hobbs – as this stalwart retailer does cut and quality like no other.
What we love about Hobbs is that they are usually on point when it comes to adding that little quirk that makes your coat stand out from the crowd. Take a look at this one – their Aerona coat – where the detachable scarf just gives it the edge. This one is the most expensive of our choices so far (£228.65), but if you work it out on a potential cost-per-wear basis then the decision to purchase is so simple!
Some more of our favourite winter coats
Winter is also about feeling indulged and warm – and sometimes it might mean buying more than one coat. Check out a few more of our current favourites:
- Checked Wool Blend Duster from Topshop (£78)
- Oasis Belted Amy Coat (£68.60) – we love this deep burgundy red
- Zara Hooded Poncho (£49.99) – a poncho can be so chic!
- Dorothy Perkins Faux Fur Boyfriend Coat (£48.30) – only left in size 16
- Little Mistress Khaki & Orange Parka (£155)
- And finally, if money was no object it would be cobalt blue again all the way with this beauty from MCQ Alexander McQueen at Net-a-Porter (£795).
Many of the winter coats we’ve shared have already been marked down in the pre-Christmas sales, so now really is the time to check them out. As always, don’t forget to tell us which ones are your favourites – you can post a comment below, or connect with us on Twitter or Facebook!
